Broccoli sprout

A true superhero

This amazing microgreen is rich in a compound that converts to sulforaphane which a chemical that is thought to have enormous health benefits. People take broccoli sprout for many ailments including high cholesterol, allergy, asthma, cancer and stomach ulcers.

Nutritional content

Broccoli sprouts are packed with nutrients that the sprout would have used to build itself into a fully functioning plant. A single, 85 gram serving of broccoli sprouts contains 6% RDI of vitamin C, 10% RDI of vitamin A, 6% RDI of calcium and 4% RDI of iron.

Broccoli sprouts are a great source of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, which are bioactive plant compounds. Broccoli sprouts provide around 100 times more glucoraphanin, which is a compound that's converted to sulforaphane when you chew it.

Benefits

Sulforaphane/Nrf2 activation helps your mitochondria make more ATP (the energy that fuels your whole body).

Sulforaphane binds to toxins ingested from processed foods, pesticides or absorbed through our environment and flushes them out. This is important as many chronic diseases have environmental pollutants as a contributing factor. By helping to clear our body of chemicals we cannot avoid, we help to reduce the chance they will interact with our DNA and lead to mutations which give risk to chronic disease such as cancer.

Broccoli sprouts have long been studied for their anti-cancer effects. Studies have shown that sulforaphane may:
- Promote cancer cell apoptosis, pr programmed cell death
- Inhibit the growth of new blood vessels that feed malignant cells
- Reduce inflammation
- Lower susceptibility to cancer-causing substances
- Reduce invasion and spread of cancerous cells

Sulforaphane may protect against certain brain conditions, including brain stroke, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Sulforaphane has been investigated in relation to cardiovascular disease, and may lower risk factors such as high triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

Broccoli sprout has been shown to help with excess estragon which in turn helps with weight management, hormone balance, mood enhancement and clear-headedness.

There is a plethora of studies examining the effects of sulforaphane on lung tissue, which shows broccoli sprout to be beneficial in providing antioxidant protection, reducing inflammation and mitigating the effects of environmental pollution on bronchial cells. (53, 54, 55)

Sulforaphane may be highly beneficial in preventing the damage caused by diabetes (67) and may improve insulin sensitivity (12, 13).

Sulforaphane can block enzymes that trigger inflammation in joints, thereby helping with the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. (69)
